The fact that we really can and do take medication for our mental health issues, and we even prescribe these drugs, is pretty mind-blowing. I’m not saying that this is what you should do, but what I am saying is that if you are stressed, anxious, depressed, or just plain overwhelmed, take a few minutes to sit with yourself on your couch or your bed and take a few deep breaths.
I know that it is easy to blame the media for all of our bad mental health, but it is important to go to therapy or a counselor before you take any type of medication, because you may be in for a rough ride. In my experience, the only people who are very effective at helping people with mental disorders are those who have had something like mental illness or alcoholism as a child.
I’ve had people say that I’m a hypocrite for claiming that mental health professionals are terrible because they say they can help, but I can’t agree more. The truth is that a lot of people with mental illnesses or addiction can’t get the help they need. If you want to help people, you have to be a whole person because it’s not just about taking drugs. There are so many other things you can do to help.
I can only imagine it’s difficult to admit you need help when you’re in a serious crisis. For a while, I was in a crisis, and even though I knew it was a serious problem, I believed I should just go to a psychiatrist and talk to him about it. After a few months, I realized that was not who I wanted to be, but I am glad I went, because I now know he is not a bad person.

After a while, I realized what kind of person I wanted to be, and my life has been very different since. I think about all the things I could have done differently if I had been given more time, more money, more support, etc. Now I just tell myself, “If I had more money, I could have had more time.
If you have a life-threatening illness, you might be able to use a psychiatrist to help you deal with it. If you have a more “normal” illness, you might want to get some professional help. If you are simply feeling like a failure or need more support from others, a therapist or counselor might be a good idea. But if you are in a crisis, just telling your psychiatrist or counselor might not be enough.
Psychiatrists and counselors are a necessary evil. In the United States, one in every five people with an ailment needs mental health services. In Europe, one in every eight people with an illness needs such services. It’s estimated that up to 50 million Americans will eventually need mental health services in this country.
Of course, there are many other things you can do to help yourself. Getting help, finding a good counselor, finding a better therapist, and even asking your doctor about the possibility of medications can all help you. But if you don’t have the funds or resources to do all of these things, asking a friend or family member for help is a good option.
It’s great to get help. But if you need medication, you need to ask your doctor. And if you are having trouble deciding between different medications, your doctor can help you figure out which one to take, and which one to stop, before you have to go through the hell of trial and error.
Of course, there are some medications that you can take without even asking your doctor, like pain medication. But you should definitely ask your doctor about meds that you can take without a prescription. Some of them are completely safe to take and can be taken by anyone, like the common cold. But others have side effects, like high blood pressure and heart disease. Your doctor will be able to help you determine which ones are safe to take and which ones are not.
